Limit each box to a maximum weight of 50 pounds, but make sure your boxes are firmly packed to prevent items from shifting.

Wrap items carefully to provide enough cushioning to absorb shock.

Use sturdy boxes that close.

Limit items in each carton to items from a single room and label the box to indicate which room it is from.

Use a notebook with a numbering or coding system to keep an inventory of each box.

Pack out-of-season or infrequently used items first. Leave things you use daily until last.

Empty drawers of breakable or spillable items. However, soft, lightweight items may be left in drawers.

Keep similar items together in a box and keep all parts of things together.

Wind electrical cords and fasten them.

Use tissue paper, paper towels, or facial tissue to wrap delicate items. Use newspaper as an outer wrapping.

Fill in the bottom of the box and empty spaces with crushed paper. Towels, T-shirts, and lightweight blankets may also be used for padding.

Put the heaviest items in the bottom of the box and build up to the lightest items on top.

Seal boxes tightly with packing tape.
